The death of Digenes Akritas: Medieval tradition and modern songs

Abstract

The aim of this article is to introduce a version of a modern akritic song, generally considered as part of the Greek folkloric tradition, whose argument refers the circumstances of the death of the Byzantine hero Vasilios Digenís Akrites. Certain aspects of the structure and topics of the song are then discussed, on the basis of some comparisons established with the medieval poems and other modern versions of Digenes' death.
