The aim of this article is to present the results of an empiric research on sociolinguistic stratification of Ukrainian and Russian in the capital of Ukraine, Kiev. I study the functional distribution of these languages in contact in Kiev, a city with historical functional and affective predominance of Russian, since current changes in the sociopolitical situation of Ukraine and in the ukrainian language policy. For this, I analyze data relative to language practices and preferences in two age groups of Kievan population, as distributed according to their sex and neighbourhood.
