Abstract

The type of violence, so-called domestic, gender or intrafamily, has roots that can be recognized throughout the history of the country. A case in the 18th century shows the socio-cultural and family background of this type of violence in Chile during the colonial time. Although it is important not to generalize one case and to keep the particularity of the texts found in the archives, when the society in which the case occurs is historically contextualized, it is possible to explain how, due to a masculine predominance, the violence against women is produced.
